What’s Inside an iPhone? A Guide to the Major Components

par Retechart Studio sur Jul 26, 2026
Editorial layout of smartphone components including a logic board, camera, controls, antenna, connector and speaker

Inside an iPhone are several tightly connected systems: a display and touch assembly, a logic board with the main processor, memory and storage, camera modules and sensors, a rechargeable battery with power-control circuitry, speakers and microphones, a haptic motor, antennas, connectors, and the enclosure that holds everything in position.

The exact shapes and locations change from one iPhone generation to another. Even so, these broad groups provide a useful way to understand how a slim glass-and-metal object becomes a camera, computer, communicator, and media device.

An iPhone Is a System, Not Just a Parts List

Looking at separated components can make a phone appear to be a collection of independent objects. In use, however, almost every action crosses several systems.

When you take a photograph, the camera captures light, sensors and stabilization hardware record additional information, the processor handles the image, memory holds active data, storage saves the result, and the display shows it. Power has to reach each part at the right time, while the enclosure keeps delicate connections aligned and protected.

This is why a list of parts answers only half the question. What is inside an iPhone matters because of the way those parts exchange power, data, sound, light, and physical input.

Seen this way, a component name is more than a label: it describes one task that depends on several other tasks being completed at the right moment.

The Major Components Inside an iPhone

Display and Touch System

The display is the phone’s main visual output, while the touch system turns taps, swipes, and gestures into input. They are experienced as one surface, but their work connects to several other parts of the phone.

The logic board supplies image data, touch information returns to the processor, and sensors can help the phone respond to viewing conditions or proximity. Display technology has changed across generations, so not every iPhone screen has the same construction or features.

Logic Board and System-on-a-Chip

The logic board is the main circuit board. It provides a compact home for the phone’s central electronics and connection points for major subsystems. Flexible cables link it to assemblies such as the display, cameras, battery, speakers, microphones, and connectors.

One of its most important components is the system-on-a-chip, often shortened to SoC. An iPhone’s A-series chip combines computing engines for general processing, graphics, and specialized tasks. Smaller circuits support power, audio, wireless communication, charging, and other jobs.

Memory and Storage

Memory and storage are related, but they do different work. Working memory holds data that the phone needs quickly while apps and system processes are active. Storage keeps iOS, apps, photographs, messages, and other files when the phone is no longer actively using them.

In a compact phone, these components are integrated into the electronics around the logic board. Their capacity and packaging vary by model. The useful distinction is simple: memory supports what the phone is doing now, while storage preserves what it will need later.

Camera Modules and Sensors

Camera modules contain lenses, image sensors, focusing or stabilization hardware, and supporting connections. A front camera faces the user; rear systems may include more than one camera with different fields of view or capabilities. The number and arrangement depend on the model.

Other sensors give the phone information beyond a conventional photograph. Depending on the generation, they may contribute to facial recognition, orientation, motion, proximity, ambient-light response, location, or depth-related features.

Battery and Power-Management System

The battery stores the energy that makes the phone portable. Recent iPhones use a built-in rechargeable lithium-ion battery, but the battery’s shape, capacity, attachment, and surrounding layout are model-specific.

Power-management circuitry controls how energy moves between the battery, charging system, processor, display, cameras, radios, and other components. It also helps different systems draw power when needed rather than behaving as if they were permanently switched on at full demand.

Lithium-ion batteries require careful handling. Apple warns that battery damage can cause overheating, fire, or injury. This article is an overview, not a repair guide: it does not provide instructions for opening a phone, removing a battery, or working around a damaged device.

Sound, Haptics, Antennas, and Connectors

Speakers turn electrical signals into sound for calls, media, and alerts. Microphones capture sound for calls, recordings, voice features, and video. Models may use more than one acoustic opening or assembly.

The Taptic Engine produces controlled physical feedback. It helps a flat glass interface communicate through small, deliberate taps or vibrations, adding a physical response to actions that otherwise exist only on screen.

Antennas and wireless circuitry connect the phone to cellular networks, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, satellite or location systems, and other radio-based functions supported by the model. Connectors and flex cables carry power and data between assemblies. Small brackets, cowlings, seals, and fasteners keep those connections protected and correctly positioned.

Frame, Enclosure, and Internal Structure

The enclosure is not just a decorative shell. It establishes the available space, supports the display and back, locates major modules, and helps the phone withstand ordinary handling. Internal plates, brackets, and adhesive systems stabilize components that must fit within very small tolerances.

Structure also affects how heat moves through the device. The arrangement reflects choices about strength, size, cameras, battery space, antennas, heat, and service access at the same time.

How the Components Work Together

Consider a video call. The camera and microphones collect image and sound. The processor prepares that information, memory holds active data, wireless systems send and receive it, speakers reproduce the other person’s voice, and the display shows the conversation. The battery powers the entire chain, while power management balances demand.

Touch input can change the camera, mute the microphone, or end the call. A sensor may adjust the screen or detect the phone’s position. None of those actions belongs to one component alone.

The “brain,” “eyes,” and “voice” metaphors are useful, but an iPhone works because specialized systems respond to one another.

Why Internal Layouts Change Between iPhone Generations

There is no single internal layout that represents every iPhone. Screen size, camera systems, radio requirements, connector standards, battery goals, sensors, materials, and repair architecture all influence the available space.

Apple’s model-specific repair documents make the distinction visible. The internal views for iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 share broad categories, but their labeled positions and supporting parts are not identical. Apple also stated that the iPhone 16 internal design was reengineered to create room for a larger battery, improve heat dissipation, and make battery service easier.

This is why a diagram for one model should not be used to label another. A familiar component may move, change shape, combine with another assembly, or disappear from a particular regional version. Comparing generations is most useful when you focus on design priorities rather than treating every difference as a simple upgrade.

Why Retired iPhone Components Can Still Be Meaningful

Once a phone stops being useful as a device, its parts can still tell a story about industrial design. The logic board shows compression and routing. Camera modules reveal how much physical space imaging requires. Speakers, haptic hardware, flex cables, and brackets show the less celebrated work behind everyday interactions.

That visual record can matter to someone who remembers a particular phone, studies product design, or simply enjoys seeing how familiar technology was organized. It is different from keeping a dead phone in a drawer because the components become legible as a composition rather than hidden inside an enclosure.

Retechart’s completed teardown artworks are non-functional displays, not repaired phones or send-in conversions. Visible phone components are genuine original parts from old devices, except for batteries. Battery areas are omitted where the layout permits; when a battery position is retained, a safe dummy battery is used. Each phone is dismantled, and its components are then rearranged, secured, and framed by hand.

If the format is unfamiliar, read what an iPhone teardown frame is. Readers deciding between a personal project and a completed piece can compare a finished iPhone teardown frame with DIY. If the phone itself still needs a responsible next use, begin with six options for an old iPhone instead.

The point is not that every old phone should become art. It is that hidden engineering can carry technical, personal, and design meaning even after the original device no longer performs its everyday job.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the main parts inside an iPhone?

The main groups are the display and touch assembly, logic board, processor, memory and storage, cameras and sensors, battery and power system, speakers, microphones, haptic hardware, antennas, connectors, and enclosure. Exact parts and positions vary by model.

Is the logic board the same as the processor?

No. The logic board is the main circuit board that carries and connects many electronic components. The processor, or system-on-a-chip, is one important chip on that board. Memory, storage, power, audio, and communication circuits also work in and around the board.

Do all iPhone models have the same internal layout?

No. Apple’s model-specific repair documents reflect these differences in layouts, modules, and procedures. Camera size, battery space, antennas, connector standards, sensors, thermal design, and structural choices can all change where components fit.

Is framed iPhone teardown art a working phone?

No. Retechart teardown artworks are completed, non-functional displays. Visible phone components are genuine original parts from old devices, except for batteries. Battery areas are omitted where possible; when a battery position is retained, a safe dummy battery is used.
